I just finished up my first painting class at Utah State. The last two paintings have been Cubist paintings. The first one is a technique called analytical cubism, where (quick art lesson) each individual piece is supposed to look like it is slanted in a different direction (not parallel to the picture plane). Mine started out looking like this:
But because it was really "busy", a term we use a lot in art to mean that there is a heck of a lot going on in the painting, My instructor advised me to simplify the shapes and make the painting feel more complete and resolved... here is the end result.
There is definitely some pear business going on, and I also see a girl doing a headstand but you can't see her face... not intentional..
The next project, the final project, is a synthetic cubist project. When he told us about the project (well I wasn't there for class that day, but I heard from others) he said that it was supposed to be a Narrative of one of my early experiences with art growing up. My first thought was a painting of my aunt that is in my grandma Sprouse's house. It was one of those paintings that, looking at it now it is really good, but back then it was so creepy! Her eyes would follow me wherever I went! I couldn't really think of how to do that very well though. I was talking to Hanah G about my project and she said that I should do one of the pink dinosaur. Best idea EVER! So I decided to take her advice.
So I had my idea, now I needed to figure out how to make it a synthetic cubist painting. My professor advised that we all go and look up cubist paintings so that we would stay on track with theobjectives of the assignment. Here are some of the paintings I looked at..
Here is the one that I kind of patterned my painting after.
The Three Musicians, Picasso.
Now, you get to watch my painting progress from this:
Tribute to Dinoville! Yaaay!
I loved getting to try out a different style of painting! It was lots of fun!
The Princess and the Frog
This movie is something that I have been really excited about for a long time. Finally we have a black girl princess! Its about time! The part that I am the most excited about, is the fact that this movie is going to be in the old school animation!

I love thanksgiving. It seems like November 1st rolls around and everyone breaks out the Christmas lights, gingerbread houses, and Christmas carols.
Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas with all of my heart. I just think that Thanksgiving is a really awesome holiday with all the potential for celebration that Christmas has.
Thanksgiving
Mascot: Turkey
Value: Giving Thanks
Celebration: eating food and spending time with the family.
Christmas
Mascot: Santa Clause
Value: Celebrating the birth of Christ
Celebration: eating food and spending time with the family. Oh... and spending money.
Money. That is the reason why Christmas robs Thanksgiving of all of it's glory. Correction: Greed robs Thanksgiving of all it's glory.
I love this picture. So funny and random. Do you think you could actually make a turkey look like that? Okay, that was probably a really stupid question.
10 reasons why I am stoked for Thanksgiving:
1. Home-cooked food
2. Warm St. George weather (yeah, be jealous)
3. I get to see my uncle from California who I haven't seen for almost a year.
4. I just love my family.
5. Family pictures. Its been a long time.
6. Eat, eat, eat. Then it's basketball time!
7. Break from school :)
8. We talk about our blessings, which always brings a smile.
9. Playing card games
10. Driving to St George with my sister. Fabulous.
Hanah G was at the costume store and found this flyer about a Haunted Museum where the monsters came alive at dusk. We invited a bunch of people to go.
We decided that we needed to go check this place out in the daytime so that we wouldn't get lost trying to find it in the dark. When we finally located the "Museum" it turned out to be the house in Nibley (a small town by Logan) with the most decorations. Sooo funny.
Because we are awesome, we decided to return again that night when the "monsters came alive." Surprisingly, no one wanted to join us. haha.
Here are some of the gems that I took a picture of with my camera phone. Enjoy.
The Kerns family hooked my Dad and I up with some BYU vs USU tickets. This was going to be interesting to say the least. I proudly supported the Aggies with my dad's old Utah State coat that he had when he lived in Logan millions of years ago ;) haha (I wear that thing everywhere, much to the dismay of my mother) and my game day t-shirt.
When we got to the stadium I was so pumped that every time I saw another Aggie fan I would yell "Go Aggies!" We made our way up to our seats and my dad and I found ourselves right in the middle of the season ticket holders.
We figured there would be two possible ways to watch this game:
Option 1: We could sit down and shut up and blend right in with the BYU blue and white.
Option 2: We could jump around and bring attention to ourselves.
Needless to say, we chose option number 2. I was planning on making a huge fool out of myself. What I WASN'T planning on was my dad cheering for the Aggies louder than I was. When the Aggies got the first touchdown of the game we went crazy! Someone behind me yelled "Sit down!" Hilarious.
Slowly other Aggie fans around us started to join in. I figure that they came to the game planning on Option 1, but we changed their mind. By the end of the game we had about six other USU fans cheering along with us. I LOVE MY DAD!
End of the story, we lost. But who really didn't see that coming? Still the best football game I've ever been to!
P.S. Thanks to the Kerns for letting a couple of Aggies come along to their sacred tradition. It was lots of fun! Hopefully we didn't embarrass you too much!
Last year I discovered the magic of July 11. Free slurpees, enough said. So on Tuesday I started talking up 7/11 at work. Everyday at work when the date would come up I would respond with a, "Yes! Almost 7/11". I was pretty much planning on wiping out all the free slurpees from every 7-11 in the northern hemisphere. Uhh Wrongo. I ended up in Orem area for a family get together, which I originally thought would be a good thing. I found out that 7/11s are not as densly populated in Orem (or anywhere else) as they are in V-town. Oh and Provo is lame.
Stop 1: Chelsea and I started out by hitting up the Provo sev. I just have to say that the Provo, Utah 7-11 is the most ridiculous gas station ever ever ever ever ever ever. I don't have enough ever's memorized to describe it. There was absolutely nowhere to park. We had to park on the side of the street. (At a gas station? I've never seen that before) When we finally parked we found out that we went through all of that trouble just to find a sign that said that there were NO more free slurpees. Ewww. Provo is lame.
Stop 2: Another sev, another sign. Free slurpees restricted to children under 11.
Stop 3: YAAAY! The next sev we FINALLY got a free slurpee. They had even run out of the little "free size" so they were giving out the normal "small" slurpee cups!
Stop 4: After that we got all of our energy back and decided to hit up yet another sev. This sev's sign said that they had run out of the free cups so they weren't giving out anymore free slurpees. We went into the store with our empty slurpee cups and stood there awkwardly trying to decide who was going to be the one to ask if we could get a free slurpee if we brought our OWN cups. After a few minutes of pretending to look for something to buy while exchanging the "you do it" looks we decided that it was pointless and we needed to get out of Orem and Provo.
We drove through a couple more towns with no luck and decided to call it a one-slurpee-night. So all of that anticipation and excitement ended up with ONE SLURPEE. Sooooo lame. Oh and to make it even more of a dissapointing night, we went to Land of Lost. For those of you who have seen it, you probably know what I mean about dissapointment. The rest of you, Don't watch it. We left early because it was lame beyond all reason.
Moral of the story: July 11th is amazing but is meant to be spent in Vernal, Utah. Provo, Utah is lame. Don't watch Land of Lost. Oh, and ice cream is difficult to eat in a dark movie theater.
