I just finished up my first painting class at Utah State. The last two paintings have been Cubist paintings. The first one is a technique called analytical cubism, where (quick art lesson) each individual piece is supposed to look like it is slanted in a different direction (not parallel to the picture plane). Mine started out looking like this:
But because it was really "busy", a term we use a lot in art to mean that there is a heck of a lot going on in the painting, My instructor advised me to simplify the shapes and make the painting feel more complete and resolved... here is the end result.
There is definitely some pear business going on, and I also see a girl doing a headstand but you can't see her face... not intentional..
The next project, the final project, is a synthetic cubist project. When he told us about the project (well I wasn't there for class that day, but I heard from others) he said that it was supposed to be a Narrative of one of my early experiences with art growing up. My first thought was a painting of my aunt that is in my grandma Sprouse's house. It was one of those paintings that, looking at it now it is really good, but back then it was so creepy! Her eyes would follow me wherever I went! I couldn't really think of how to do that very well though. I was talking to Hanah G about my project and she said that I should do one of the pink dinosaur. Best idea EVER! So I decided to take her advice.
So I had my idea, now I needed to figure out how to make it a synthetic cubist painting. My professor advised that we all go and look up cubist paintings so that we would stay on track with theobjectives of the assignment. Here are some of the paintings I looked at..
